How to Charge Your EV in Pakistan — Step by Step

Getting Started with EV Charging in Pakistan
Charging your EV in Pakistan is simpler than most people think. You essentially have three options: home charging, public AC stations, and DC fast chargers along highways and in major cities.
1. Home Charging (The Daily Default)
Most Pakistani EV owners do 80–90% of their charging at home overnight.
- Portable charger (3.3 kW): Plugs into a standard 16A socket. Adds roughly 15–20 km of range per hour. Ideal for short city commutes.
- Wallbox (7.4 kW): Requires a dedicated single-phase line from your distribution board. Full charge in 6–8 hours for most EVs sold here.
- Three-phase wallbox (11–22 kW): Available in DHA, Bahria and newer housing societies that support three-phase. Cuts charge time in half.
Tip: Charge between 11 PM and 6 AM on K-Electric and LESCO off-peak slabs to save up to 30% on per-unit cost.
2. Public AC Charging
Found at malls, hotels and offices in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. Usually 7–22 kW, priced per kWh or per hour. Bring your own Type 2 cable.
3. DC Fast Charging
For long trips, look for 60 kW+ CCS2 stations on the M2 (Lahore–Islamabad) and M9 (Karachi–Hyderabad). Most EVs go from 20% to 80% in 30–45 minutes.
Step-by-Step at a Public Station
- Park so the charging port aligns with the cable.
- Open the charge port (button on dash, key fob, or app).
- Authenticate — RFID card, app QR, or station screen.
- Plug in firmly until you hear a click.
- Start the session and monitor on the app or screen.
- End the session before unplugging.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't unplug mid-session without stopping first — it can lock the cable.
- Don't charge to 100% every day. 80% daily preserves battery life.
- Don't fast-charge on a hot afternoon if you can wait — the car will throttle speed to protect the battery.
