Planning a Long EV Road Trip in Pakistan
Lahore to Karachi, Islamabad to Skardu, Karachi to Gwadar — all doable in an EV with planning. Here's the playbook.
1. Map Your Charging Stops First
Use PakEV Hub's station finder and PlugShare. For the M2 Lahore–Islamabad route there's now reliable CCS2 coverage at Bhera, Sukheki, and Kallar Kahar. The M9 Karachi–Hyderabad has fewer fast chargers; plan for AC top-ups at hotels.
2. The 20–80 Rule
Charge from 20% to 80% — beyond 80%, charging slows dramatically. Two short stops beat one long one.
3. Pre-Trip Checklist
- Top up to 100% the night before (one-time exception to the daily 80% rule).
- Check tyre pressure — under-inflated tyres can cost you 10% range.
- Pre-cool the cabin while plugged in.
- Carry a portable 3.3 kW charger as backup.
- Save offline maps of charging stations.
4. Driving Style Matters
- Stick to 100–110 km/h on motorways. At 130 km/h you lose 20–25% range.
- Use Eco mode on inclines.
- Maximize regen braking — set it to the highest comfortable level.
5. Sample Route: Lahore → Karachi (1,200 km)
| Stop | Distance | Charge to |
|---|---|---|
| Lahore (start) | 0 km | 100% |
| Bhera Service Area | 175 km | 80% |
| Sukkur (overnight AC charge) | 450 km | 100% |
| Moro / Nawabshah | 250 km | 80% |
| Karachi | 325 km | Arrive 15% |
Two days, no range anxiety.
6. Worst-Case Backup
If a charger is offline, look for industrial estates — many have 3-phase outlets where shop owners will let you top up for a tip.
