EV Fire Safety in Pakistan — What You Should Know
EV fires get headlines but are statistically 80% rarer than petrol-car fires. That said, when they happen they behave differently. Here's the practical guide.
Why EV Fires Are Different
- Thermal runaway: Once a damaged lithium cell overheats, it triggers neighbours. The fire is harder to extinguish and can reignite hours later.
- Toxic smoke: Battery fires release hydrogen fluoride. Stay upwind.
- Water works: Despite myths, fire services use large volumes of water to cool the pack. Don't use small extinguishers on the battery.
Prevention — 90% of Safety
- Never charge a physically damaged battery — post-collision, get a dealer inspection before plugging in.
- Use the OEM charger or certified wallbox. Avoid cheap aftermarket bricks.
- Don't leave the car charging unattended on a frayed extension cord.
- Install a residual current device (RCD) on your home charging line.
- Park in a ventilated spot when charging — never in a sealed bedroom-adjacent garage.
Warning Signs
- Hissing or bubbling sounds from under the car
- Unusual sweet/chemical smell
- Smoke from charging port or underside
- Sudden warning light during charging
If you see any of these: unplug, move away, call 1122 immediately.
If There's a Fire
- Get everyone out, including pets.
- Move 15+ metres away — keep upwind.
- Call Rescue 1122 and explicitly say "electric vehicle fire" so they bring extra water.
- Do not try to drive the car or open the bonnet.
Pakistan-Specific Tips
- During load-shedding, surge on restoration has damaged chargers. A good surge protector is worth PKR 8,000.
- Avoid charging during heavy monsoon flooding — water in the home charging socket is the biggest risk.
- Keep your home insurance policy updated to explicitly include "EV charging equipment".
The Reality
Pakistan has had zero confirmed EV battery fires as of 2025. Stay informed, follow basics, and you'll never need this guide.
