How Much Does It Cost to Charge an EV in Pakistan?
Charging cost depends on where and when you charge. Here's the 2025 breakdown.
Home Charging
Residential electricity in Pakistan is tiered:
| Slab | Rate (approx) |
|---|---|
| 1–100 units | PKR 16/unit |
| 101–300 units | PKR 32/unit |
| 301+ units | PKR 50–62/unit |
| Off-peak (11 PM – 6 AM) | ~30% discount |
A typical EV with a 50 kWh battery needs ~45 kWh from empty to full.
- Best case (off-peak, low slab): PKR 720
- Realistic case (you're already in 301+ slab): PKR 2,250–2,800
- Worst case (peak hours, top slab): PKR 3,100
Public AC Charging
Mall and hotel chargers usually cost PKR 50–70 per kWh. A full charge: PKR 2,250–3,150.
DC Fast Charging
Highway and city DC chargers run PKR 90–130 per kWh. A 20%→80% top-up (~30 kWh): PKR 2,700–3,900.
Cost Per Kilometre
| Method | Cost / km |
|---|---|
| Home off-peak | PKR 2–3 |
| Home regular slab | PKR 6–8 |
| Public AC | PKR 8–11 |
| DC fast | PKR 14–20 |
| Petrol car (12 km/l) | PKR 21–22 |
Even on the most expensive DC charger, an EV is still cheaper than petrol.
How to Lower Your Bill
- Install a smart meter and shift charging to off-peak.
- Use a timed charger that auto-starts at 11 PM.
- Charge to 80% daily; only fill to 100% before long trips.
- Consider rooftop solar — payback in 4–5 years if you drive an EV.
