Battery Care Tips for Pakistan's Heat

Lithium batteries hate heat. Karachi in June (45°C) and Multan in May (47°C) are not battery-friendly. Here's how to protect your investment.

Why Heat Matters

Every 10°C above 25°C doubles the chemical degradation rate of lithium-ion cells. An EV parked daily in 45°C ambient can lose 4–5% capacity per year vs 1–2% in a cooler climate.

Daily Habits That Help

  1. Park in shade whenever possible. A car cover helps even in open parking.
  2. Charge to 80%, not 100%, for daily use. Full charge + heat = fastest degradation.
  3. Don't park at 100% in the sun for hours.
  4. Avoid DC fast charging at peak afternoon if you can shift it to evening.
  5. Pre-cool while plugged in before leaving. Lets the battery's cooling system run on grid power, not battery.

Avoid Three Mistakes

  • Charging immediately after a fast highway run in summer. Battery is already hot. Wait 20–30 minutes.
  • Leaving the car at 0% for days in heat. Self-discharge plus heat permanently damages cells.
  • Ignoring coolant maintenance. All modern EVs have liquid battery cooling — get the coolant checked at the 40,000 km service.

Long-Term Storage

Going abroad for the summer? Leave the car at 50–60% charge, in a covered spot, and have someone plug it in for an hour every 2 weeks.

What the Numbers Look Like

A BYD Atto 3 stored daily at 100% in Karachi heat may show ~12% capacity loss by year 5. The same car charged to 80% and parked in shade may show only 6%. That's the difference between 380 km and 415 km of usable range — and ~PKR 4 lakh in resale value.
